J.P. was one of my middle school crushes. He and I walked to science together, and if I had come from a more socially well-adjusted family, we might have even been friends. We were the quiet and smart students who were always reading. I looked up his phone number in the phone book, but I never had the nerve to call. I got him a ticket to the school dance, but I never gave it to him. I can’t even begin to imagine the completely different turn my life would have taken if I had expressed my feelings for him.
