About Me
Hi! I’m Lola. Here’s everything you need to know:
I have been maintaining a personal website since 2001. In March of 2007 I became the webmistress of http://blawgalicious.com and made the switch to Wordpress, which has made my Internet life much easier. The name blawgalicious comes from a variation of blog (meaning web log). The word blawg has come to mean a web log about law. Originally, I had the intention of writing much more about law than I seem to now. The “licious” part comes from delicious. So when you put it all together blawgalicious means the delicious blog that’s somewhat about law. Or you can just think of it as the law variation of “bootylicious”. Creative, huh?
I work as a criminal defense attorney. Sometimes people ask me how I can defend “such bad criminals”, especially if I “know they’re guilty”. Now, I know laywers are about the same place on the likeability spectrum as used car salesmen, but stick with me. First of all, let’s not forget that there are people who are wrongfully accused. The Constitution applies to everyone, whether guilty or not. Some people tell me that they don’t think guilty people deserve to have rights or any kind of Constitutional protections. However, how do you sort out the guilty from the wrongfully accused during the process of justice? In my opinion, it’s impossible, which is why everyone is entitled to the same protections. Besides, the Constitution is what makes this country such a great place. Finally, on the verdict form that the jury takes back to the jury room with them at the end of a trial there is no option for “innocent”. The options are “guilty” or “not guilty”. This is important because to find someone not guilty of whatever crime he or she is accused of, you simply have to have reasonable doubt that the person is guilty. To find a person not guilty you don’t have to believe that the person is a saint or wholly innocent. That’s the way our justice system is set up. I’ve heard it said that it’s better to let 1000 guilty people go free rather than to wrongfully punish one innocent person. Unfortunately, there are both a lot of guilty people who go free, and a lot of innocent people who are punished. I think what we have to do is to keep working on our justice system and to keep making improvements to ensure that we have the best and fairest system possible. Ok, I’m climbing down from my soapbox.
I try to use Blawgalicious.com less as a place to get on my soapbox and more as an outlet for creativity. When I was a child, I was terrified of art and creativity. We were required to go to art class once a week at school, so as frequently as my mother would allow, I would be “sick” on art day. Now, I feel differently, and try to embrace whatever creative side I have, even if that side of me doesn’t like to play by the rules. I’d like think of myself as being spiritual, romantic, hopeful, creative, and happy. Some people awake having already forgotten their dreams, but I dream of cool water and crisp linen sheets, of love and heartbreak, of blueberry wine, and sunshine on bare skin. I’d love to meet interesting people who are passionate about life.
